Federal Student Debt Relief Plan

On August 24th, the Biden administration and the U.S Department of Education announced a three-part plan to help working and middle-class federal student loan borrowers transition back to regular payment as pandemic-related support expires. This plan includes a one-time, pandemic-related loan cancellation of $10,000 in student loan debt for borrowers making less than $125,000 annually or families making less than $250,000 annually. Additionally, borrowers who received Pell Grants in college will receive an extra $10,000 — totaling $20,000 in forgiveness. This relief includes current students and borrowers who have federally held undergraduate, graduate, and Parent PLUS loans that fully disbursed by June 30, 2022. In addition, the administration also announced that it would again extend the pause on payments and interest accrual for federally held student loans through the end of the year, until Dec. 31, 2022.
