For Tax Filers

IRS Tax Transcript – Preferred

If the IRS was unable to provide you or your parent  tax information directly to the Department of Education when you completed the FAFSA,  IRS a 2022 Federal Tax Return Transcript(s) can be provided to LMU Financial Aid (signature not required) to meet the tax requirement. Click IRS Tax Transcript for more information on the process.

Individuals requesting their tax transcripts are recommended to use the IRS.gov "Get Transcript Online" or "Get Transcript by Mail" services.

Amended Tax Returns

An individual who filed an amended IRS income tax return for 2022 must provide a signed copy of the 2022 IRS form 1040X, “Amended U.S. Individual Income tax Return,” that was filed with the IRS or documentation from the IRS that includes the change(s) made by the IRS, in addition to one of the following:

  • IRS DRT information on an ISIR record with all tax information from the original tax return; or
  • A 2022 IRS Tax Return Transcript (that will only include information from the original tax return and does not have to be signed), or any other IRS tax transcript that includes all of the income and tax information required to be verified.

Paper or electronic copy of the return if it contains a signature.

Acceptable examples would include, but are not limited to:

  • A signed paper return that the student either mailed or brought to the school.
  • A signed paper return that the student faxed or scanned and emailed.
  • An electronic copy that the student signed with a stylus or finger.
  • An electronic copy that we consider signed because it has an image of the student’s signature attached.

However, a signature on Form 8879, the IRS e-file Signature Authorization, is not an acceptable substitute for a signature on the tax return. For persons who have a tax professional prepare their return, instead of a copy of the return with the filer’s signature, you may accept one that has the name and PTIN of the preparer or has their SSN or EIN and has been signed, stamped, typed, or printed with their name and address. Note that the IRS requires paid preparers to have a PTIN.
