Academic Scholarships for Entering Freshmen

Loyola Marymount University offers a wide range of Academic Scholarship Programs for Freshmen entering in the Fall semester to recognize and reward the scholastic accomplishments of our most distinguished entering freshmen. All applicants for admission are automatically considered.

Current Undergraduate Scholarship Opportunities

Throughout the year we post information on scholarships coordinated through LMU which require students to apply by submitting an application or essay. Click Undergraduate LMU Scholarships for current opportunities.

For information on scholarships from private organizations click on Other Scholarship Opportunities.

Finally, we encourage all students to utilize "free" Scholarship Search Engines before, during and after enrollment.

Tips on Applying for Scholarships

1. Start ASAP and apply early - Don't miss scholarship deadlines.

2. Search locally - Check your local banks, grocery stores, clubs, businesses, organizations, and churches in your community.

3. Read the Requirements - review requirements carefully to make sure you are eligible so that you do not waste your time.

4. Follow Instructions Carefully - It is a good idea to have someone proofread your application.

5. Neatly Presentable, Neatly Packaged - Make sure your entire application looks professional.

6. Communicate - If you are not sure about something in the application, don't guess, contact the organization for clarification.

7. Grades - A higher GPA will usually make you eligible for more scholarships and increase your chance of receiving funds.

8. Never pay to apply for a scholarship because it is probably a scam!

Receipt of Outside Agency Scholarships/Awards

If you receive outside agency scholarships/awards or other resources at any time during the academic year, you must:

I. Notify the Financial Aid office. Federal, state and university regulations require the Financial Aid Office to consider all student and parent income, assets and outside resources when determining your eligibility for financial aid. We may be required to reduce other aid including LMU Grant or other university aid as it is not always possible to limit reductions to loans and work study funding.

II. Notify the agency and ask them to :

1. Send your scholarship check(s) as early as possible. Check(s) should be payable to Loyola Marymount University. Ensure that your full name and LMU student ID is written on the check.

2. Mail the check to:

Financial Aid Office
Loyola Marymount University
1 LMU Drive Suite 200
Los Angeles, California 90045-2659

III. In case you have received the check directly from the agency and it is payable to LMU :

1. Ensure that you write your full name and LMU Student ID on the check if it is not already indicated.

2. Deliver the check to the Financial Aid Office or mail to:

Financial Aid Office
Loyola Marymount University
1 LMU Drive Suite 200
Los Angeles, California 90045-2659

IV. Details on how the funds will disburse :

1. The Financial Aid Office will update the “Other Resource” section of your PROWL account with the actual amount of your scholarship check. If a scholarship check is received for the fall semester and the scholarship notification indicates that you will receive a similar amount for the spring semester, we will update the “Other Resource” section on your PROWL account to reflect the “estimated” award for spring.

2. Your scholarship funds will be applied to your student account for the term in which the funds are received. Your scholarship check should be credited to your student account within 10-14 days after it is received by the Financial Aid Office.

3. The disbursement of your scholarship check can be delayed if:

a. Your name or LMU ID is not shown clearly on the check.

b. You have a hold on your student account.

c. You do not meet enrollment or other eligibility requirements as indicated by the scholarship agency.
