Federal Grants


Federal Pell Grants

The Federal Pell Grant, is a federal, need-based grant awarded to undergraduate students who have not yet earned a bachelor’s degree. Awards are based on full-time (12 -18 units) enrollment. However, students enrolled in fewer than 12 units may be eligible to receive a prorated Federal Pell Grant.

LMU will award the Federal Pell Grant based on the 2009-2010 approved Federal Pell Grant amounts provided by the Department of Education. The maximum Federal Pell Grant is $5,350.

Annual renewal of the Federal Pell Grant is not automatic. Students must apply for federal financial aid each year and meet all federal specified requirements. 



Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG)

The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG) is a federal, need-based grant awarded to undergraduate students who have not yet earned a bachelor’s degree. Priority is given to students who demonstrate exceptional financial need and who have been awarded the Federal Pell Grant.

Full-time enrollment (12-18 units) is required to receive this award. FSEOG funds are limited and funds may not be available for applicants who do not meet LMU’s priority processing deadlines. 
The amount that FSEOG eligible students may receive will be between $100 and $1,200 based on  financial need and the available funding at LMU.

Annual renewal of the Federal Supplemental Grant is not automatic. Students must apply for federal financial aid each year and meet all federal specified requirements. Awards depend on available funding at LMU.


The Academic Competitiveness Grant

The Academic Competitiveness Grant is a federal, need-based grant awarded to undergraduate freshmen and sophomore students who are eligible for the Federal Pell Grant, completed a ‘‘rigorous high school education’’ as defined by federal guidelines, and are U.S. citizens.  Full-time enrollment (12-18 units) is required to receive this award prior to the 2009-2010 academic year. Beginning 2009-2010, eligible students enrolled less than full-time but at least half-time may receive a prorated ACG award.  

The Academic Competitiveness Grant will provide eligible students up to $750 for the first year of undergraduate study, and up to $1,300 for the second year of undergraduate study. Students must maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0.

If LMU determines that you meet the eligibility requirements for this grant, your will be awarded an ‘‘Estimated Federal ACG Grant’’. Once we confirm that you meet the federal requirements, the estimated award will be converted to an ‘‘Actual Federal ACG Grant’’ your award will be revised and you will receive an email notifying you that your revised award is available to view on your PROWL account.

If you are found to be ineligible for this grant, LMU will make every effort to reconsider you for additional funds. This federal grant is available for a maximum of two years, and renewal is NOT automatic. Students must apply for federal financial aid in their sophomore year and continue to meet the federal guidelines for this program to be considered. Once you have utilized all of your grant eligibility, LMU will make every effort to reconsider you for additional funds.

Transfer students who have received the ACG Grant in their previous institution but have not been awarded the grant by LMU, need to notify the Financial Aid office at finaid@lmu.edu.

The National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (National Smart Grant)

The National SMART Grant, is a federal, need-based grant awarded to junior and senior undergraduate students who are Federal Pell Grant recipients, U.S. citizens and who are majoring in subjects determined to be critical to national security. Full time enrollment (12-18 units) is required to receive this award along with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA. Beginning 2009-2010, eligible students enrolled less than full-time but at least half-time may receive a prorated National SMART Grant award.  

A National SMART Grant will provide eligible students up to $4,000 each academic year.

If LMU determines that you meet the eligibility requirements for this grant, your will be awarded an ‘‘Estimated SMART Grant’’. Once we confirm that you meet the federal requirements, the estimated award will be converted to an ‘‘Actual SMART Grant’’ and your award will be revised.

If you are found to be ineligible for this grant, LMU will make every effort to reconsider you for additional funds. This federal grant is available for a maximum of two years, and renewal is NOT automatic.
