Academic Year 2010-2011
How to Apply – 2010 -2011 Academic Year
Important: You cannot complete the 2010-2011 Free Application for Federal Student Aid until after January 1, 2010.
Step One: Complete the 2010-2011 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
LMU requires any student who wishes to receive federal, state or institutional funded financial aid to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA). The FAFSA must be completed by February 1, 2010 for priority processing. Students who complete the FAFSA and other aid requirements by this date will receive their Financial Aid Award by April 1, 2010.
If your or your parents' tax returns will not be completed by February 1, 2010 you can provide estimated student and parent income and tax information on the FAFSA in order to meet the priority deadline. Note: Students can continue to apply for financial aid after February 1st and are encouraged to do so if financial aid is required to attend LMU. Applications will be processed in the order received.
There are two ways to complete the FAFSA- online or using the paper form.
● Apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Applying online is safe and secure and will provide you with online edits to assist you in the completion of your FAFSA. Both you and at least one parent must apply for a Personal Identification Number (PIN) to sign the FAFSA electronically. LMU’s school code is #001234.
OR
● The Department of Education encourages all students to apply electronically; however, you can obtain a paper FAFSA by calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center (FSAIC) toll-free at 800-4-FED-AID. If you complete a paper FAFSA, make sure your application is error-free, has your signature and the signature of at least one parent and is received by the federal processor prior to LMU’s February 1, 2010 priority processing deadline. Don’t forget to enter LMU’s school code of #001234 on your FAFSA.
Click here for information on avoiding common mistakes students make when completing the FAFSA.
Important! After you complete your FAFSA, check www.fafsa.ed.gov to review your Student Aid Report (SAR) and verify that your FASFA was processed and the results sent to LMU. If there was a problem processing your FASFA there will be messages on your SAR notifying you what you must do to make corrections.
STEP TWO: Should you decide to accept admissions to LMU you may be required to submit your and your parents’ 2009 Federal Income Tax Returns
Should you decide to accept admission to LMU you may be required to submit your and your parents’ 2009 federal tax returns to the Financial Aid Office. If you or your parents are not required to file a 2009 federal tax return, you must submit the non-filer forms which are available for download at www.lmu.edu/financialaid. The information collected in these returns/non-filing statements, will be used to verify the financial information provided on the FAFSA.
STEP THREE: California Residents— Complete the Cal Grant GPA Verification Form
We strongly encourage all financial aid applicants who are California residents, to apply for the Cal Grant. To apply, you must complete your FAFSA and have your GPA sent to the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) by their March 2, 2010 deadline. Many high schools and colleges will automatically file your GPA Verification Form with the California Student Aid Commission. However, it is your responsibility to confirm the GPA Verification filing process at your school. If you are required to initiate this process, the GPA Verification Form is available at your high school or can be downloaded from www.calgrants.org. An official from school must complete the GPA verification portion of this form before sending it to CSAC. The GPA Verification Form must be completed and postmarked by March 2, 2010.
STEP FOUR: Continue Communication with the Financial Aid Office!
Additional information may be required from you or your parents to complete your financial aid application throughout the year.
Typically, if additional documentation is needed, the Financial Aid Office will communicate with you via e-mail. The Financial Aid Office will use the e-mail address provided on your admission application and/or FAFSA. Please be sure to provide an active e-mail account and check it regularly to keep up with important aid announcements and any additional document requests from LMU.
