Possible Scenario/Cause

Change in Parent or Student Income

  1. Financial Aid Appeal Form
  2. LMU requires that before considering adjusting the estimated family contribution (EFC) using professional judgment, the family complete federal verification to confirm the initial data provided on the FAFSA
  3. 2012-2013 Parent/Student Projected Year Income Form
  4. If unemployed, final paystub showing year-to-date earnings, if unemployed and documentation of unemployment benefits expected or receiving.
  5. Copy of Divorce decree or filing for separation, if applicable.
  6. Copy of Death Certificate, if applicable.

Change in the Value of Parent/Student Asset(s) reported on FAFSA.

Expenses - Difficulty meeting parent (or student) contribution due to unusual expenses

  • Elder care expenses, can be considered only if elder is not already reported in the family size on the FAFSA.
  • Medical -must be paid medical expense that exceed 11% of adjusted gross income to be considered.
  • Private elementary or secondary tuition for younger siblings.

  2. Supporting Documentation. Note for medical, please only provide documentation of medical expenses paid. DO NOT PROVIDE copies of medical tests, diagnosis or other confidential information.
  3. Private Elementary/Secondary Expense Verification Form, if applicable.

2011 Parent Income

Inflated due to a onetime source of income in 2011.

Request to be considered an Independent Student

  • Child abuse
  • The location of the parent or parents is unknown.
  • The student has been removed from the family home by the state.

A signed and dated statement (approximately 1 page) detailing:

1. your current relationship with your parent(s)

2. whether you were claimed on your parent (s) or someone else’s tax returns in 2011

3. your last contact with your parent(s)

4. whether you have requested your parent to assist you in applying for financial aid.

Make sure to include your LMU Student ID and the academic year for which you are submitting the appeal.

Three Dependency Override Letters of Support. These letters should be from adults familiar with your case, such as a teacher, counselor, medical authority, member of the clergy, prison administrator, government agency, or court and should establish the unusual circumstances.

Submit evidence in support of your request such as signed letters, official documents such as a court order or police reports.
