How Cal Grants are Awarded at LMU
At LMU, we award two different types of Cal Grants, Estimated and Confirmed.
Estimated Cal Grant
If you apply for financial aid, and your FAFSA application indicates that you meet the basic requirements to receive a Cal Grant, an "Estimated Cal Grant" will be posted to your financial aid award. This award is not guaranteed until your cal grant eligibility has been confirmed by the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC). To ensure your award is confirmed in a timely manner, please make sure you are assigned to Loyola Marymount University’s roster on Webgrants for Students.
Confirmed Cal Grant
Once LMU receives the official list of Cal Grant eligible students on the Loyola Marymount University Cal Grant Roster from CSAC, LMU will confirm that you have met the requirements to receive a Cal Grant and convert your "Estimated Cal Grant" to a "Cal Grant A" or "Cal Grant B". For continuing students, your Cal Grant may not be confirmed until June due to CSAC’s processing of renewal awards. You will be notified that your award has been revised electronically.
If you are found to be ineligible, LMU will make every effort to reconsider you for additional funds.
If you receive a California Aid Report (CAR) from CSAC indicating that you may be eligible for a Cal Grant and we have not included an "Estimated Cal Grant" on your financial aid award, submit a copy of the CAR to the Financial Aid Office. LMU is required by CSAC to confirm your eligibility. If you are found eligible, federal and/or university funds initially awarded to you may be reduced or cancelled to ensure compliance with federal, state and university policies and you will be notified that your award has been revised.
You must apply for financial aid annually and continue to meet the renewal requirements established by CSAC to receive a Cal Grant.
Special Note regarding Cal Grants:
Certain students have been selected by the California Student Aid Commission to complete CSAC’s “Cal Grant Asset Verification Form” to verify their eligibility for their 2011-2012 award.
If you have been selected, CSAC will send you a letter requesting that you complete this document within 14 days of the date of their letter. You can als Customer Service Branch toll-free at 1-888-224-7268.o determine if you need to submit this document by checking WebGrants for Students. To qualify for the Cal Grant, parent (or student assets for independent students) must be at or below the asset ceilings as determined by CSAC. Please click here to view the Income and Asset Ceilingsfor new or returning Cal Grant recipients.
IMPORTANT! – Revisions Made To Student Accounts
Pending official confirmation of your Cal Grant eligibility from CSAC, we must revise your financial aid award and return your Cal Grant to an “Estimated Cal Grant”. This revision requires that the first disbursement of your Cal Grant be reversed from your Student Account.
- If you have made a payment plan with Student Accounts, you will receive notice that your next payment has been increased.
- If you have paid-in-full for the fall semester, you will receive a bill requesting payment for the reversed amount.
- This revision to your award may also affect refunds that you are expecting.
Pending a decision on your Cal Grant status from CSAC, you do not need to make any arrangements with Student Accounts. Student Accounts is aware of this new requirement.
CSAC will review your asset form and make the decision on your eligibility. Should you fail to submit the asset form to CSAC within the timeframe or your eligibility is not confirmed because your assets exceed the asset ceiling, LMU is unable to replace your Cal Grant with institutional aid. You will then need to make the adjusted payments as requested by Student Accounts or if you have paid in full pay the balance on your student account.
If you have any questions regarding this notice, please contact the Financial Aid Office at finaid@lmu.eduor 310)-338-2753.
